"Infant indigestion is a condition every mother has to deal with ... usually with a gentle rub to the baby’s back. But the cure in the animal kingdom is not always so compassionate.
Sokojoo, a month-old Colobus Monkey, has become a family outcast because of her excessive hiccupping. First her mother, Sierra, stopped feeding Sokojoo. Then staff at Newquay Zoo in Cornwall found Sierra sitting on top of her tiny daughter in a sign of rejection.
Sokojoo, which means hiccup in the Mandinka language of Gambia, her species’ natural habit, is just 9in tall and weighs less than 2lb. So keepers have removed her from the enclosure and are bottlefeeding her milk every two hours.
She still gets the hiccups – but at least she is safe from being squashed. . "
